Decision Driver Training Programme

 

Who Should Attend?

Those who drive in-company vehicles or their own vehicles during the course of their work. They will receive specialist training and guidance in order to improve their driving competency, further reduce the risk of road traffic accidents and comply with current safety, health and welfare legislation.

 

Drivers will learn: Theory (4 hours, Maximum 20 Drivers)


- Their role and responsibilities in relation to workplace

- Applying the ABCD Model of human behaviour to driving situations that may involve aggressive drivers, tailgaters etc. Including the psychology of work with a view to determining drive attitudes

- The legal definition of driving for work and the safety, health and welfare legal framework relating to workplace driving. Including a review of recent case laws and accidents

- What to do if involved in an accident, including the legal process following an incident or accident

- The vehicle control system and how to reduce fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and accident rates

- Hazard Identification and risk assessment including how to perform a running commentary on a drive

- The importance of having the appropriate documentation in place, etc.

- Coaching and communication skills

 

Practical (1.5 – 2 hours, Own Vehicle)

Drivers will be given a thirty minute instructor-lead practical demonstration drive with a running commentary including a vehicle check and discussion. (i.e., practical application of the theory)

The driver will then perform a similar demonstration as the instructor.

The practical session will conclude with a feedback and feed forward session in relation to the drive and all associated assessment documentation will be signed off by both the driver and the instructor.

 

Driver Resources

Each driver will receive a specially designed workbook that will help them apply their learnings from the course to road. This workbook will also provide with them the opportunity for reflection on their roles. In addition, each driver will receive a complimentary copy of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) Advanced Driving The Essential Guide.

 

Assessments

Driver Metrics – this is an online driver behavioural assessment that takes about 30 minutes to complete. All feedback is then compiled along with assessment results and presented to the client.

 

Instructional Methods

Coaching style using Honey and Mumford learning cycle supported by practical examples, group discussion and case studies.
